Short description of the aim of the research chair

Improved biosecurity not only aims at preventing the introduction and spread of epidemic / exotic diseases that may have detrimental impacts on entire production chains (e.g. African Swine Fever, Avian Influenza, Foot and Mouth Disease,…). It also addresses the daily concerns of farmers linked to the endemically present infections that need to be kept under control to prevent the adverse health effects and economic consequences, as well as increased antimicrobial use and impaired animal welfare. Moreover, biosecurity is key in preventing zoonotic infections (e.g. Campylobacter, Salmonella,…) and therefore also benefits human health in a stable to table approach. Although there is general consensus on the value and importance of biosecurity measures, quantifying these effects remains a hugely diverse and complex challenge. The goal of this research chair is to contribute in the research and education on all components of biosecurity at farm level and in the full production chain. The animal species involved are pigs, poultry and cattle.
